Description

The Toscana Tenuta Tignanello Solaia from Marchesi Antinori comes from the homonymous vineyard located in the Chianti Classico area and is produced only in exceptional vintages.

It is made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc grapes, harvested from the end of September to mid-October. Once in the winery, the clusters are gently destemmed and the grapes carefully selected before pressing. Fermentation and maceration take place in 60 hl truncated conical tanks, then the wine is placed in barrels for malolactic fermentation, to enhance its finesse and pleasantness. It then matures in French and Hungarian oak barrels for about 18 months, after which the different batches, vinified separately according to variety, are blended to create the final blend.

The Solaia is characterized by a very intense ruby red color. On the nose, it has a great impact and the different varieties express themselves at their best with fragrant, intense, and sweet notes of red fruits and spices. On the palate, it is vibrant, enveloping, and with great structure, with soft tannins. Overall, it is an elegant and balanced wine, with a long and persistent finish that recalls the spicy notes perceived on the nose.

Vintage 2002

2002 was a particularly challenging year for viticulture in Tuscany, marked by a cold and rainy summer that affected the quality and quantity of the grapes harvested. In response to these difficulties, the production of Solaia was drastically reduced, and the wine was marketed under the label "Annata Diversa," indicating a composition outside traditional schemes.

Solaia 2002 demonstrates how even in unfavorable conditions, attention to detail and rigorous production can create a balanced and surprisingly harmonious wine. The rigorous selection of grapes allowed for achieving a result that, although different from the more classic vintages, retained identity and quality.

The wine presents a less opulent but well-balanced structure, with fine aromas and a developed, pleasant mouth supported by integrated tannins. Bottle aging has enhanced its more elegant components, making it a pleasant discovery for enthusiasts of the cru.
